In his epic poem the Argonautica, Valerius Flaccus owes a great deal to the Hellenistic epic poem by Apollonius of Rhodes for its theme and to Virgil’s Aeneid for its language. As to subject matter, Valerius keeps with the interests of Roman times by embedding references to Rome in the mythical story. As to form, his neoclassical, or neo-Virgilian, pretensions are undeniable. While Valerius interprets Apollonius through the lens of Virgil, traces of the Neronian-era influence on Roman literature, especially that of Seneca and Lucan, can also be found.
