Biodiversidad en el zooplancton marino: ¿estamos ignorando algo?

The study of marine biodiversity can be analyzed within different conceptual frameworks: however, it remains clear that, when its wealth on superior taxonomic levels is taken into account, the efforts devoted ta increase our knowledge of marine biodiversity are insufficient. Some researchers assume that marine biodiversity is not threatened, except for certain marine mammals and turtles.However. factors as pollution, habitat destruction, overfishing and global climatic changes favour the disappearance of less conspicuous marine specieswhich will never be known. For marine zooplankton communities, fragile and scarcely attended as a highly diverse community, to ignore means both lack of knowledge and indifference. Data on the actual knowledge of marine zooplankton diversity suggest a tridimensionally distributed wealth whichwe can only surmise. This is particularly true in tropical areas, where oceanographic stability, environmental heterogeneity and high speciationrates have favoured a high diversity... which we should not ignore.Como también lo indica Margalef (1968), la biodiversidad de un sistema se refleja con un bajo grado de distorsión a ciertos niveles; para ser un buen indicador de biodiversidad. el grupo taxonómico debe estar distribuido en todo el ecosistema. Es por ello que el zooplancton y el fitoplancton son buenos indicadores de biodiversidad en los ecosistemas acuáticos. pero relativamente desconocidos. Sin embargo, es evidente la falta de especialistas en la taxonomía de grupos particulares; esto deriva en parte del eterno entredicho que persigue a los investigadores que dedican su tiempo a la taxonomía, actividad tradicionalnentemenospreciada, pero que debe ser reforzada ahora más que nunca porque conocer la biodiversidad equivale a saber más de nuestro propio futuro, como moradores de este planeta
