Consumo mediático y actividades alternativas: Un estudio comparativo entre adolescentes con TDAH y estándar

The majority of researchers and professionals working in the educational field agree that the media play a key role in the socialization of today’s youngsters. One group which may be particularly susceptible to the effects of the media are children and adolescents who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the similarities and differences between a selection of television (and other screen-based media) viewing indicators, alternative activities and characters with whom subjects identify, in a sample of 25 adolescents with ADHD and 184 standard adolescents from the Autonomous Region of the Basque Country, in Spain. Data was collected by means of a survey. The results reveal that the group with ADHD watched more television at weekends than the standard group. In relation to alternative activities, adolescents with ADHD spent more time playing videogames and less time on the Internet, with their family and with their friends. Also, when the two groups were compared, differences were also observed in the type of programs and characters preferred by each. These results suggest that the two groups use the media in different ways, and that adolescents with ADHD spend less time engaged in social interaction activities.La mayoría de los profesionales de la educación e investigadores están de acuerdo en considerar que los medios de comunicación tienen un papel fundamental en la socialización de las generaciones más jóvenes. Un colectivo que puede ser especialmente susceptible a los efectos de los medios son los niños y adolescentes con Trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH). Por ello, el objetivo del presente estudio ha sido analizar las similitudes y diferencias en algunos indicadores de consumo televisivo (y de otras pantallas), actividades alternativas y personajes de identificación de 25 adolescentes con TDAH y 184 adolescentes estándar de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca. La metodología utilizada ha sido de encuesta. Entre los resultados se halló que el grupo con TDAH ve más televisión el fin de semana que el grupo estándar. Respecto a las actividades alternativas, los adolescentes con TDAH pasan más tiempo con videojuegos y menos tiempo en Internet, estar con la familia y estar con los amigos. Asimismo, en la comparación entre grupos, se encontraron diferencias en el tipo de programas y personajes preferidos. Estos datos sugieren un uso diferencial de algunos medios, además de la menor presencia de actividades de interacción social en adolescentes con TDAH
