Prácticas ambientatales y desempeño organzacional en la hotelería: Un estudio de sus relaciones en la ciudad de Porto Alegre, Brasil

In times of a consumer and less sensitive culture, the human being is causing several environmental problems. In this context, organizations that are positioned in an environmentally responsible way are gaining importance in the market place. The tourism and hospitality sectors, when well planned, can help mitigating the environmental impact and also improve levels of organizational performance. However, it also can help increasing the burden that the natural environment already receives when sheltering many tourists that are not responsible in destinations and hotels that are not planned to work in an environmentally sustainable way. Thus, this article proposes to analyze the hospitality industry of Porto Alegre in regard of its organizational performance and environmental practices. To answer this question, a survey via e-mail was conducted in the hospitality industry of Porto Alegre, analyzing the relations between environmental practices and organizational performance in the hospitality industry of the city. From the 88 hotels inquired, 39 responses were obtained. Analyses were carried out using nonparametric statistical methods. The main findings show that the lodging facilities that have more environmental practices tend to present the best organizational performances. Likewise, the hotel chains showed better results when compared to independent hotels.Inmerso en una sociedad consumista y poco sensible el ser humano está causando innumerables problemas ambientales. En este contexto, las organizaciones que se posicionan como ambientalmente responsables están conquistando un nicho de mercado importante. El turismo y la hotelería son segmentos que bien planeados pueden ayudar a mitigar el impacto ambiental y mejorar también los niveles de desempeño organizacional. No obstante, también pueden generar una sobrecarga en el ambiente natural al enviar turistas poco responsables a los destinos y hoteles que aún no poseen planes para trabajar de forma más sustentable. De esta forma, el presente artículo se propone analizar la hotelería portoalegrense en relación a sus desempeños organizacionales y a sus prácticas ambientales. Se realizó una encuesta (survey) vía correo electrónico con los medios de hospedaje de Porto Alegre, Brasil, analizando el tipo de relación existente entre las prácticas ambientales y el desempeño organizacional. Del universo de 88 hospedajes sondeados se obtuvieron 39 respuestas. El análisis se realizó a través de métodos estadísticos no paramétricos. Los principales resultados apuntan a que los medios de hospedaje que poseen más prácticas ambientales tienden a poseer mejores desempeños organizacionales. De la misma forma, las redes hoteleras presentaron mejores resultados al ser comparados con los hoteles independientes
