Interacción madre-hijo y desarrollo mental infantil: Implicaciones para la atención temprana

Objective: We pretend to analyze the relation between the maternal sensitivity and the motherchild interaction quality, and how the last affects child’s mental development in his/her first year. Methodology: The participants in this study were 19 children (11 boys and 8 girls) 12 month old, who were born in term and without pre or postnatal complications, with normal weight and high at the birth; and their respective mothers. The dyads came from intact families of medium socioeconomic level, residents in the Comunidad Autónoma de Murcia (Spain). The Mental Development of children was assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley, 1993); and the mother-child interaction was analyzed with the “CARE Index: Child-Adult Relation Experimental Index “designed by Crittenden (2001). Results: Maternal sensitivity has a significant relation with the child’s cooperative behaviour; both aspects together, promotes a synchronic and good-quality interaction; which is positive related with better mental development indexes. Conclusions: Maternal sensitivity is not an individual characteristic; it is a factor which emerges from the dynamic of the mother-child interactions. The relevance of this construct in the Early Intervention context is it relevance as a protective factor, in the implementation of intervention lines and the promotion of the infant’s development.Objetivo: Se pretende analizar la relación entre la sensibilidad materna y la calidad de la interacción infantil, y como ésta ultima afecta el desarrollo mental del niño en su primer año de vida. Método: Participaron 19 niños (11 niños y 8 niñas) de doce meses de edad, nacidos a término y sin ninguna complicación pre ni postnatal, con peso y longitud normales al nacer; y sus respectivas madres. Las díadas pertenecían a familias intactas de nivel socioeconómico medio, residentes en la Comunidad Autónoma de Murcia (España). Se evaluó el desarrollo mental de los niños mediante las Escalas BSID-II; y la interacción madre-hijo se valoró empleando el “CARE-Index: Índice experimental de relación niño-adulto” diseñado por Crittenden. Resultados: La sensibilidad materna está relacionada, significativamente, con el comportamiento cooperativo en el niño. Ambos aspectos, en conjunto, promueven una interacción sincrónica y de calidad que se relaciona positivamente con mayores índices de desarrollo mental. Conclusiones: La sensibilidad materna no es una característica individual, sino un factor que surge de la dinámica misma de las interacciones madre-hijo. La importancia de sensibilidad materna, desde el punto de vista de la atención temprana, radica en ser un factor útil a la hora de implementar líneas de intervención y promoción del desarrollo infantil
