Since the end of the nineteenth century on both sides of the Andes several research have took into account some features of the Spanish language in contact with mapuzungun. In this study we describe the uses and characteristics of that variety in indigenous settlements and interethnic border areas during the period surrounding the so-called "desert campaign". We consider documents produced primarily between 1860 and 1880 that provide evidence for the oral and written Spanish language in those contexts, and observations recorded in the same period by non-Mapuche people that traveled across those spaces, in order to analyse the configuration of elements that made it a different variety from standard Spanish; we also note some stereotyped feat...
