Enterobacteria are the mostfrequent etiologic agents of nosocomialinfections (ni). Many of the strains involvedare resistant to beta-lactam antimicrobialssince they produce β-lactamases, andin a growing number of cases theyproduce extended-spectrum β-lactamases(esbl). The excessive use of β-lactamantimicrobials increases the selection ofmultiresistant strains, favoring their spread.The strains producing esbl may presentadditional resistance to aminoglycosides,quinolones, tetracyclines, and trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole,thus reducing therapeuticalternatives.
