This paper studies the concepts about the social function of the ruler in the prehispanic, colonial and modern Mayan society. Inside the Mayan thought the political position is a religious duty and a community responsibility. The ruler is identified with the gods, he is the cosmic axis and he is conceived as the one in charge to conserve the order and to guarantee the well-being of the society. The paper analyzes colonial documents as well as historical and anthropological contemporary studies. The social values expressed in the political Mayan conception allow establishing a comparison with those of the western society.
