El cargo: Acerca De La Función Del Dirigente Político En La Sociedad Maya

This paper studies the concepts about the social function of the ruler in the prehispanic, colonial and modern Mayan society. Inside the Mayan thought the political position is a religious duty and a community responsibility. The ruler is identified with the gods, he is the cosmic axis and he is conceived as the one in charge to conserve the order and to guarantee the well-being of the society. The paper analyzes colonial documents as well as historical and anthropological contemporary studies. The social values expressed in the political Mayan conception allow establishing a comparison with those of the western society. The service is the first duty of the public official.El presente artículo aborda los conceptos de la sociedad maya, prehispánica, colonial y moderna, acerca de la función social de quienes detentan la autoridad. Dentro del pensamiento maya el cargo político es un deber religioso y una responsabilidad comunitaria. El gobernante se identifica con los dioses, asume el papel de eje cósmico y se concibe a sí mismo como el encargado de conservar el orden y garantizar el bienestar de la sociedad. El artículo recurre al análisis de documentos coloniales así como de estudios históricos y antropológicos contemporáneos para demostrar sus argumentos. Los valores sociales expresados en la concepción política maya permiten establecer una comparación con los de la sociedad occidental y revalorar que el funcionario público está en primer lugar al servicio de la sociedad
