The aim of the present study was to compare the electromyographical activity (EMG) of the upper Orbicularis Oris muscle during swallowing and phonation in subjects with and without unilateral cleft lip and palate. 32 healthy subjects of both sex, between 7 and 13 years old participated in the study. 16 subjects with a history of cleft lip and palate surgery during their first year of life were included in the experimental group, while 16 mesocephalic subjects, Angle molar class I, paired by age and sex, were selected to be the control group.
