Desarrollo del sector microfinanciero en México: indicadores profundidad y amplitud 1996-2012

The purpose of this study was to analyze the development of the microfinance sector in Mexico from 1996-2012, using depth and breadth indicators in order to know about what levels of poverty are affecting the microfinance institutions and how is behaving the market of borrowers. The study was conducted with a sample of 120 Mexican MFIs. A methodology of quantitative analytical type with control and study groups was used; the variables considered in depth were: sex, loan size and location; for breadth: number of active borrowers. The results indicate that the levels of poverty on which are working the MFIs is low on its majority. As for the number of borrowers a positive growth can be seen, this makes clear the process of expansion and constant change of the sector. It can be concluded that MFIs as a tool have the potential to promote economic development in disadvantaged areas, in some cases and if used properly can succeed. However, it is still an area with many research lines pending in this context, the challenges facing the sector are numerous and their survival depend on them for years to comeEl propósito de este trabajo fue analizar el desarrollo del sector microfinanciero en México en el periodo de 1996-2012, mediante los indicadores profundidad y amplitud con el objetivo de conocer sobre que niveles de pobreza están incidiendo las instituciones de microfinanzas y como se esta comportando el mercado de prestatarios. El estudio se realizo con una muestra de 120 IMF´S mexicanas. Se empleo una metodología de tipo cuantitativa analítica con grupos de control y de estudio, las variables consideradas en profundidad fueron: sexo, tamaño de crédito y ubicación y para amplitud: numero de prestatarios activos. Los resultados indican que el nivel de pobreza sobre el cual están trabajando las IMF´S es bajo en su mayoría. Y en cuanto al número de prestatarios se advierte en general un crecimiento positivo, esto hace evidente el proceso de expansión y constante cambio del sector. Se concluye que las IMF´S, como herramienta poseen potencial para fomentar el desarrollo económico de sectores desfavorecidos, en ciertos casos y de ser empleada de forma adecuada puede tener éxito. Sin embargo, aún es un área con muchas líneas de investigación pendientes, en este contexto, los retos del sector son numerosos y de ellos depende su supervivencia en los años venideros
