In the next pages, I shall demonstrate that Earth’s motion in Copernicus’ De Revolutionibus is an astronomical hypothesis and it is not a philosophical thesis as Galileo and several historians have suggested. First, I shall present textual evidence which exem-plifies how Copernicus regarded Earth’s motion as a riskless astronomical principle, i.e., as an epistemologically adequate hypothesis in order to keep up appearances and to infer the order and size of celestial orbs. Then, I shall analyse the natural-philosophical arguments offered by Copernicus at the beginning of his work which are not a direct proof of the phys-ical reality of Earth’s motion, but they try to make explicit the insufficiencies of his oppo-nents’ reasons and so add ve...
