Objective The objective of this epidemiological study was to do a community diagnosis to estimate in general population the prevalence rate of alcohol use, abuse and dependence. Methodology To determine sample size for this study, estimates of prevalence rates for specific disorders were garnered from earlier studies. The sample size was calculated for the whole Colombian country as 13.554 household residents' 12 years and older and 1.054 institutional residents, same age group considered.
