La Primera República portuguesa y las misiones católicas y laicas en Angola: financiación y poder

This article examines, through the prism of finance, the relations between the Portuguese state and both the Catholic and secular missions in the colony of Angola during the period of the Portuguese First Republic (1910-26). The continued funding of Catholic missions by the Republic, although acknowledged by the Military Dictatorship in 1926, was rapidly downplayed and then forgotten by Portuguese historiography. The First Republic had, after all, been notable for its atmosphere of hostility to religion, disestablishing Catholicism as the state religion and declaring the separation of church and state. It had also created secular missions as a state project for the colonies along the lines of the religious missions, while dropping any faith other than the «civic religion» of the Republic itself. It is not surprising, then, that the myth that the Republic, during its most anticlerical phase, was disinclined to finance the Catholic missions should have gained currency. However, the colonial budgets and the Vatican Archives tell a different story, one that brings other nuances into the debate over the religious and colonial questions in Portugal, as well as the policies of other European overseas empires, most notably the French Third Republic, from whose efforts at laicization the Portuguese Republic drew its inspiration.En este artículo se analizan las relaciones entre el Estado portugués y las misiones católicas y laicas en la colonia de Angola durante la I República (1910-1926), desde el prisma de su financiación. La continuidad de la financiación republicana a las misiones católicas, a pesar de haber sido reconocida por la propia Dictadura Militar en 1926, rápidamente comenzó a ser desvalorizada y después olvidada por la historiografía. ¿Acaso la I República no había abolido el catolicismo como religión de Estado y decretado la separación entre el Estado y las Iglesias, en el marco de un ambiente que cabría calificar como de guerra religiosa? ¿No creó, incluso, un proyecto estatal concurrente para sus colonias, a imagen y semejanza de las misiones religiosas pero expurgado de cualquier otra creencia que no fuera la religión civil de la propia República: las misiones laicas? Por eso, no es de extrañar que el mito de que la República, en su fase más anticlerical, habría dejado de apoyar financieramente las misiones católicas fuera asumiendo visos de verdad. Sin embargo, los presupuestos coloniales y los archivos del Vaticano nos cuentan otra historia, que introduce nuevos matices en el debate sobre la cuestión religiosa y colonial en Portugal, sin olvidar las políticas de otros imperios europeos ultramarinos, en especial la de la III República Francesa, en cuya obra laicizante se inspiró la portuguesa
