The study of Mayan Yucatecan vowels began since the first moment in which friars of the colonial epoch initiated the elaboration of grammars and dictionaries. After this, it is possible to identify, in literature from different times, several models of this language based on the gradual discovery of vocalic features (glottal state, length, tone) and modify the proposed models for this vocalic system. The present essay offers a swift [brief-short] description of Yucatecan vocalic system by presenting some contrasts of words that are distinguished by some of their vocalic features.
