Since year 2000, inequalities have decreased in most of the Latin American countries, althoughsome of them have experienced an increase. This article analyzes the underlying causes to inequalityprocesses, focusing on two cases where inequalities have been reduced (Brazil and Mexico) and one where it increased (Uruguay).The analysis suggests that both market trends and Stateintervention played an important role in the inequality dynamics. Specifically in Brazil and Mexico,inequality decrease is strongly linked to a reduction in salary gaps related with the education level,and less to cash transfers.
