Com a dialecte castellà, el judeoespanyol utilitza un sistema de dos gèneres �categories masculina i femenina� per tal de classificar els substantius. Mentre aquest dialecte es va parlar a la Península Ibèrica, va manllevar nombrosos elements lèxics de l�hebreu (el qual també disposa de dos gèneres) amb finalitats legals i religioses. Però a partir de 1492, ja en terres otomanes, la llengua va començar a manllevar mots del turc (sense un sistema de gènere).
