During the 16th and 17th centuries, many Spaniards retumed to Spain from the Indias, loaded with the riches they had acquired tiiere, and persuaded that the dificulties they had sufFered in the New World entitled them to certain privileges normally reserved to the nobility or military héroes. These Spaniards were called indianos upon their retum to Spain, where, by the mid-16th century, common people already had a rather negative view of the indianos. What we know today about them comes from 17th Century theater, when Lope brought this type to the scene, defined it, explained it, and inmortalized it by including it in more than 40 dramas between 1588 and 1635.
