This article deals with the use in New Spain of medieval mythology, Jewish and Christian, with educational and legitimating purposes, showing the western ways of thinking, and the perception of the new world by the Spanish colonizers. A comparassion is made between the Quetzalcoatl of the Historia Tolteca-Chichimeca myth, with a tarascan myth extracted from La Relación de Michoacán.Este artículo da cuenta de algunos documentos históricos novohispanos que muestran formas discursivas y esquemas narrativos medievales utilizados en la conquista española con fines de educación evangélica y de legitimación.
