Altitude’s effects on complex cognitive ability

The coastal prejudice on the intelectual inferiority of Andean populations has been examined in scientific fora of Peru and abroad during the 19th and 20th centuries, but has not been systematically addressed by Peruvian psychology. Predictions were derived in this study from observations on cognitive effects of poor oxigenation, several evolutionary theories on cold and intelligence, and the theory of intelectualimpacts of UVB radiation and vitamin D3. The hypotheses were evaluated at both sides of the Andean mountains within a latitudinal segment (8º to 10º S) by analyzing mathematics and reading comprehension scores of children in 2nd grade of primary instruction from the 2 011 Control Sample of the Ministry of Education (N = 25 058). The findings strongly suggest that, if deficits in complex cognitive ability occur, they only affect persons not adapted to altitude.El prejuicio costeño sobre la inferioridad intelectual del andino ha sido discutido en ámbitos científicos peruanos e internacionales en los siglos XIX y XX, pero no ha sido abordado sistemáticamente por la psicología peruana. El presente estudio ofrece predicciones a partir de la observación sobre los efectos cognitivos de la pobre oxigenación, varias teorías evolucionarias del frío y la inteligencia, así como la teoría de los efectos intelectuales de la radiación UVB y la vitamina D3. Las hipótesis fueron evaluadas en las vertientes del Pacífico y el Atlántico de la franja latitudinal de 8º a 10º de latitud sur mediante análisis de puntajes de matemática y comprensión de textos de niños de segundo de primaria de la Muestra de Control 2011 del Ministerio de Educación (N = 25,058). Los resultados de la investigación sugieren fuertemente que, si ocurren daños en la habilidad cognitiva compleja a altos niveles de altitud, estos solo afectan a las personas no adaptadas a la altura
