Gaza, Sozomeno y los mártires cristianos de la época del emperador Juliano

This paper, in its first half, tries to explain and to describe the religious character of the civitas of Gaza and its «chora» during IV century, as well as the efforts of converting the region to Christianity by bishops and monks. The paper then tries to interpret the information given by the Christian writer Sozomeno of the presumed martyrdom of three Christians in the age of emperor Julian. It is an event which to our judgment should be dispossessed of the religious and ideological load that Sozomeno wanted to give it, and to see simple a very habitual, religious popular act of violence.Este trabajo, en su primera mitad, trata de explicar y describir el carácter religioso, pagano, de la civitas de Gaza y su «chora» a lo largo del siglo IV, cuál fue su punto de partida a comienzos de siglo y qué dinámica de confrontación tuvo con el cristianismo, o mejor, con los esfuerzos de cristianización de la región por parte de obispos y monjes. En una segunda mitad, el trabajo, teniendo presente el contexto religioso anterior, trata de interpretar la noticia del escritor cristiano Sozomeno sobre el presunto martirio de tres cristianos en época del emperador Juliano, suceso éste que a nuestro juicio debe ser desposeído de la carga ideológica y, más en concreto, religiosa que Sozomeno quiso darle, y ver en él un simple suceso de violencia popular religiosa, muy habitual en las ciudades tardorromanas de la época
