Estudio retrospectivo sobre la eficacia del tratamiento de las úlceras en el pie diabético mediante oxigenoterapia tópica

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the uppermost degenerative chronic diseases. Among the complications we can find angiopathies and neuropathies, which together result in the development of the diabetic foot (DF). PURPOSE: To evaluate the response of diabetic foot ulcers with topical oxygen treatment (TO). METHODOLOGY: Descriptive and retrospective clinical trial, on patients who were treated during consultation at the Hospital General Valencia’s Ulcer Unit. The patients showed diabetic foot ulcer and were treated with TO. The sample took place between 2009, when the Ulcer Unit began applying TO therapy, and 2013. RESULTS: The sample is composed of 22 patients. Among its attributes, it is worth mentioning that 54.5% were men and 45.5% women. The average age being 64.68 years old. Upon assessing the results, 68.2% healed versus 27.3% who did not and 4.5% of patients healed by grafting. FINDINGS: Our experience, the Topical oxygen is a safe and effective therapeutic method. Its application can have a beneficial effect on the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, improving their healing and preventing infection.ANTECEDENTES: La Diabetes Mellitus (DM) es una de las enfermedades crónicas degenerativas con más importancia. Entre las complicaciones se encuentran angiopatías y neuropatías, que juntas, conllevan a la formación del Pie Diabético (PD). A pesar de los avances en la cicatrización de las úlceras del pie diabético, todavía hay necesidad de búsqueda de nuevas estrategias de tratamiento. OBJETIVO: Evaluar la respuesta de las Úlceras del Pie Diabético al tratamiento con oxígeno tó- pico (OT). METODOLOGÍA: Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo. Revisión clínica de los pacientes atendidos en las consultas de la Unidad de Úlceras del Hospital General de Valencia que presentaban úlcera del pie diabético y han recibido OT, desde el año 2009 hasta el año 2013. RESULTADOS: La muestra obtenida fue de 22 pacientes. Entre sus características se destaca el que el 54.5% fueron hombres y el 45.5% mujeres. La media de edad fue de 64,68 años. El 68.2% de las úlceras tratadas cicatrizaron frente a un 27, 3% que no lo hicieron. Un 4,5% cicatrizaron mediante injerto. CONCLUSION: Según nuestra experiencia, el OT es un método terapéutico efectivo y con un efecto beneficioso en el tratamiento de las úlceras de pie diabético, mejorando el tiempo de cicatrización y la prevención de la infección
