This paper aims to analyze how the philosophical and ideological trends that influenced the founders of occupational therapy, crystallized through them on a philosophical basis, and what the evolution of the philosophical basis of occupational therapy has been since its formal establishment as a profession in 1917. A literature search was conducted in the main bibliographic databases (PUBMED , OTDbase, Web of Knowledge). A detailed analysis of Adolf Meyer's first philosophy is made and the two official philosophical bases of the American Occupational Therapy Association in 1979 and 2011 are analyzed.
