The effect of the type of grain boundaries and crystalline orientation on cavitation erosion wear (E-C) in an austenitic stainless steel with 0.9 % N2 was studied. A 100% austenitic structure was obtained by high temperature gas nitriding of a UNS S31803 duplex stainless steel. The samples were submitted to cavitation-erosion tests in a vibratory apparatus using distilled water during 64 h. Tests were periodically interrupted for analyzing the mass loss and surface damage using Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM. The type of grain boundaries were determined by electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD).
