In the work of Herodotus, amongst the women who hold and effectively exercise power, Tomyris and Artemisia have both significant common aspects: queens, widows, mothers, and involved in armed conflicts in which they personally intervene. The differences existing between them are essentially their characters: legendary and barbaric of the first one; historical and hellenized the second one.
