Influence of teaching about oral hygiene awareness to parents of children less than three years in the health center of Mala, Peru.

The present study aied to determine the effect of education on oral hygiene knowledge of parents of children less than three years in the Health Center of Mala, Peru, in 2009. The study was descriptive and comparative. A test of 12 questions about oral hygiene to 58 parents and the influence of the implementation of oral health knowledge in parents of children less than three years, before and after performing an educational workshop that used posters, flip charts, dolls, models and demonstration techniques-MACRI (Special dental stretcher for babies) were performed. The test showed four components with three questions each: 1) oral hygiene items, 2) oral hygiene habits, 3) pathology and oral hygiene, and 4) oral hygiene techniques. Most parents before the workshop had a low (65.5 %) and medium (20.6 %) level of knowledge about oral hygiene. There has been a significant increase in knowledge after the educational workshop on oral hygiene techniques (386 %) and oral hygiene items (320 %). Almost three quarters (74 %) of parents of children less than three years of the study indicated that participants improved their knowledge. A96.6 % of parents believe it is a tool that serves. The educational workshop allows participants to have a greater level of understanding of oral health (89.7 %).El presente estudio tiene como objetivo determinar el efecto que tiene la enseñanza sobre el conocimiento de higiene bucal a padres de niños menores de tres años en el Centro de Salud de Mala, Perú, durante el 2009. El estudio fue descriptivo y comparativo. Se realizó una prueba de 12 preguntas sobre higiene bucal a 58 padres y la influencia que ejerce la aplicación de los conocimientos sobre salud bucal en los padres de niños menores de tres años, antes y después de realizar un taller educativo que empleó gigantografías, rotafolios, muñecos, maquetas y técnicas demostrativas �MACRI (camilla odontológica especial para bebes). La prueba presentó cuatro componentes con tres preguntas cada uno: 1) elementos e higiene bucal; 2) hábitos de higiene bucal; 3) patología e higiene bucal, y 4) técnicas de higiene bucal.La mayor cantidad de padres antes del taller tuvo un nivel bajo (65,5%) y medio (20,6%) de conocimiento sobre higiene bucal. Se ha observado un incremento muy significativo en el conocimiento después del taller educativo en Técnicas de higiene bucal (386%) y en elementos e higiene bucal (320%). Casi las tres cuartas partes (74%) de los padres de familia de niños menores de tres años participantes del estudio indicaron que han mejorado sus conocimientos. Un 96,6% de los padres consideran que es una herramienta que le sirve. El taller educativo permite que los participantes tengan mayor un nivel de comprensión sobre salud bucal (89,7%)
