This paper presents the case of Milao, a virtual environment that offers foreign language learners the opportunity to develop and constantly improve their communicative skills in a language they are trying to learn by participating in a set of predefined conversation scenarios that closely mimic real life situations. This technology proposes a solution to one of the major challenges in foreign language learning: the lack on opportunities to put into practice newly acquired grammar and vocabulary.
