This paper uses the foundations of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994) to trace some of the principal criteria for considering orality as an essential competence in the university classroom, which must be privileged in the training of future professionals, who require the development of communicative abilities through efficient and productive didactic strategies that strengthen adequate discursive practice in academic spaces.
