Today, we continue to attend to high levels of sinister claims, the possible reflection of poor or nonexistent structures of prevention of occupational hazards in many workplaces. The need for security, hygiene, prevention and job training is both a reflection of ourselves and our attitudes, priorities actors increasingly dependent and demanding with the workplace and with everything it implies. Nursing at work has assumed an increasingly important role in the area of Occupational Health. The Nurse at the Workplace has skills that allow him to carry out activities to promote health, prevent accidents and work related illnesses and prepare workers for emergencies. These activities are of great importance since they reduce sickness absence, improving productivity. This article presents the main objetives and areas of Occupational Health with the aim of raising the consciousness of readers to their real importance for workers and employers.Nos dias de hoje, continua a assistir-se a elevados níveis de sinistralidade, no eventual reflexo de deficientes ou inexistentes estruturas de prevenção de riscos profissionais em muitos locais de trabalho. A necessidade de segurança, higiene, prevenção e formação no trabalho é, simultaneamente, uma reflexão sobre nós mesmos e as nossas atitudes, intervenientes prioritários, cada vez mais dependentes e exigentes com o trabalho e com tudo o que ele implica. A enfermagem do trabalho tem vindo a assumir um papel cada vez mais importante na Área da Saúde Ocupacional. O Enfermeiro do Trabalho tem competências que lhe permitem realizar atividades de promoção da saúde, prevenção de acidentes e doenças relacionadas com o trabalho, bem como preparar os trabalhadores para situações de emergência. Estas atividades revestem-se de grande importância uma vez que diminuem o absentismo por doença, melhorando a produtividade. O presente artigo expõe os principais objetivos e áreas de intervenção da Saúde Ocupacional, com o objetivo de consciencializar os leitores para a sua verdadeira importância para o trabalhador e entidades empregadoras
