Unfortunate marriages have always had a place of honor in western literature. Suffice it to review the icons of our civilization: Iliad, Oedipus King, Orestiad, Madame Bovary� During the Middle Ages a particularly disastrous kind of conjugal union takes place: the �malmaridada� romances. The narrative nature of these poetical compositions presents us with a recurring little plot: a man draws away from his home, during his absence the woman commits adultery; he then returns home, unveils the transgression, and imposes punishment upon his wife.
