Fotografía e identidad social: retrato, foto carné y tarjeta de visita

In the following investigation we analyze the photographic portrait a semiotic structure the fundamental object of which is the presentation and establishment of social identity. For this purpose we first compare the photographic portrait with the pictorial portrait; the first having emerged from the latter. Second, we analyze two known portrait standards: ID photos and the carte de visite. Thirdly, we characterize the portrait from four criteria -form of record, recognition, presentation, hierarchy- which enables us to distinguish portrait discourse from other types of photographic discourse. Finally, the portrait appears as a semiotic product of the individual and the photographer, which seeks to provoke a particular interpretation in the viewer.En la presente investigación se analiza el retrato fotográfico como una estructura semiótica cuyo objetivo fundamental es la presentación y consagración de la identidad social. Para ello se compara el retrato fotográfico con el retrato pictórico, del cual el primero es heredero. En segundo lugar, se analizan dos formas propias de la retratística conocidas como la foto carné y la carte de visite. En tercer lugar, se caracteriza al retrato a partir de cuatro criterios -registro, reconocimiento, presentación y jerarquía- que permiten distinguir al discurso retratístico de otros tipos de discurso fotográfico. Finalmente, el retrato aparece como un trabajo semiótico del individuo y del fotógrafo que busca provocar una lectura particular en el receptor
