In the following investigation we analyze the photographic portrait a semiotic structure the fundamental object of which is the presentation and establishment of social identity. For this purpose we first compare the photographic portrait with the pictorial portrait; the first having emerged from the latter. Second, we analyze two known portrait standards: ID photos and the carte de visite. Thirdly, we characterize the portrait from four criteria -form of record, recognition, presentation, hierarchy- which enables us to distinguish portrait discourse from other types of photographic discourse.
