In the 2006 PISA assessment, Chile achieved results that were similar in average but less unequal than those of Uruguayan students, albeit having a higher income inequality. This paper evaluates to what extent the educational systems of both countries contribute to educational equality. We estimate an educational production function for the results of the PISA assessments in mathematics, science and reading. We then estimate indicators of the incidence of socio-economic context and school factors on the inequality of the outcomes. We find that Uruguay presents an equal or higher inequality than Chile in the outcomes of the three tests, and that the share of this inequality that can be attributed to context factors is equal or less.
