Lope de Vega: Novelas a Marcia Leonarda

Lope de Vega: Novelas a marcia Leonarda Boccaccio and Lope de Vega mark the beginning and the end of the first phase of novel-writing in Europe. The main differences between them pertain to their conceptions of the role of the narrator. The narrator in the Decameron, a second-grade authority, generally distances himself from the incidents he relates, presenting them without comment, whereas Lope�s narrator is such a personal voice that on occasion he gives the impression that it is the autor who is speaking. According to A. Carreño, the four Novelas a Marcia Leonarda embody the conventions of four different genres: the Byzantine novel, the Morisco novel, the Italian novella and the books of chivalry. The present study highlights a particular aspect of each story in order to illuminate dfferent facets of Lope�s ars narrandi: 1) Inverisimilitude of plot and techniques of persuasión in Las fortunas de Diana; 2) History and fiction in La desdicha por la honra; 3) Tragic history à la Bandello and Giraldi Cintio in La prudente venganza; 4) The heroic short story as a work of entertainment in Guzmán el Bueno.Boccaccio y Lope se sitúan en los puntos de inicio y fin del primer ciclo de creación novelística europea. Las diferencias principales entre ambos afectan a sus respectivos modos de concebir el papel del narrador. El narrador del Decamerón, una instancia de segundo grado, renuncia por lo general a comentar los sucesos que expone y los presenta de manera distanciada. El narrador de Lope, por el contrario, es una voz tan personal que a veces parece identificarse, ilusoriamente, con la del propio autor. Según A. Carreño, las cuatro Novelas a Marcia Leonarda reproducen las convenciones de cuatro géneros distintos: la novela bizantina, la novela morisca, la novella italiana y los libros de caballerías. En este estudio se elige un aspecto particular de cada novela con el fin de iluminar diferentes facetas del ars narrandi de Lope: 1) Inverosimilitud de la trama y técnicas de la persuasión en «Las fortunas de Diana»; 2) Historia y ficción en «La desdicha por la honra»; 3) La historia trágica en el sentido de Bandello y Giraldi Cintio en «La prudente venganza»; y 4) La novelita heroica como obra de entretenimiento en «Guzmán el Bueno»
