The bark of Uncaria tomentosa (Willd. ex Roemer & Schultes) DC (�guna de gato�h) is used in traditional medicine in Mexico for the treatment of cancer. The purpose of this study was to carry out chemical and botanical analysis of different bark samples and conclude about its quality. Macroscopic (size, color, surface characteristics, texture, fracture, odor and flavor) and microscopic characteristics (isolated vessels, radios, calcium oxalate crystals, collenchyma cells, parenchyma cells and sieve tubes) were determined. Water-soluble and condensed tannins and alkaloids were detected by histological and qualitative tests; these components contribute to the immunostimulant and anticancer properties of the specie.
