Modernización económica y consumo energético en Chile, 1844-1930

This article aims to review the path of the Chilean economy in the hundred years before 1930, using modern energy consumption as an indicator. The hypothesis put forward here proposes that the economic modernization ushered in by capitalism can be well un- derstood by following the evolution of the curve of modern energy consumption (coal, oil and hydroelectricity). In this sense, the Chilean economy became modernized relatively early with regards the Latin American context. The commodity lottery endowed Chile with enough coal to cover a substantial part of consumption from the 1840s, and the import capacity of this outward looking country meant the remaining coal it required but did not produce, could be imported (later it was oil and turbines for hydroelectricity that were imported). Chile was an outstanding latecomer to energy modernization in the coal era and this allowed it to take advantage of the favourable cycles in the international economy of the 19 th century. This path of positive economic growth for Chile was interrupted in 1913 with the outbreak of the First World War. The replacement of coal with oil implied high opportunity costs, which the Chilean economy was unable to reduce as successfully in the previous energy transition from biomass to fossil energy.El objetivo de este artículo es revisar la trayectoria de la economía chilena del siglo anterior a 1930, recurriendo al indicador de consumo de energías modernas. La hipótesis que aquí se propone, defiende que la modernización económica que impuso el capitalismo en el mundo, puede ser bien comprendida siguiendo la evolución de la curva del consumo energías modernas (carbón, petróleo e hidroelectricidad). En ese sentido, la economía chilena se modernizó tempranamente para el contexto latinoamericano. La ¿lotería de los recursos¿ dotó al territorio de carbón mineral como para satisfacer una fracción importante de su consumo desde la década de 1840, la capacidad importadora de una economía volcada al exterior permitió comprar en el exterior el carbón que el país no producía (y posteriormente el petróleo y las turbinas para producir hidroelectricidad). Chile fue un ¿late comer¿ aventajado de la modernización energética de la época del carbón y eso le permitió aprovechar los ciclos económicos favorables de la economía internacional del siglo XIX. La trayectoria se truncó en 1913, el estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial interrumpió la secuencia positiva que llevaba la economía chilena. El reemplazo del carbón por petróleo enfrentó altos costes de oportunidad que la economía chilena no supo reducir tan bien como lo había hecho en la transición energética previa, la del paso de la biomasa a las energías fósiles
