This article attempts to explain the concept of theo-politics in an analysis of the colonial regime established in the conquest of America. Studying the construction of patronage in the Iberian Peninsula, it seeks to identify how belief, power, ecclesiastical doctrine and civil law are articulated, both in Europe and in the New World. It then proceeds to study the regalism developed by scholars linked to the State. It demonstrates that the ideas of theologians who reflected upon the relation between Church and State in the 18th century were not so distinct from those established by the laity.
