La revolución del Río de la Plata: entusiasmo, desaliento y mito fundacional

This article intends to explore the images and evocations of the revolution spread in the Rio de la Plata public and private discourses, from 1810 to 1816, as well as the changes produced after the middle of the 1830s, when collective memory -at least of a group engaged with the building of the Nation-State- begins to shape a narrative referred to the recent political past. Two tasks are involved in this analysis: first, the examination of the intellectual context in which there is shift from a rhetoric of political regeneration associated with what was thought to be a foundational event "the formation of an autonomous Junta on 25th May 1810" to a discourse whose main topic was the building of an order that required the closure of the revolutionary process; second, the approach to the role played by historical memory in the fostering of a revolutionary foundational myth. The first period exhibits a sort of "overuse" of the "revolution", both as a concept and as a political experience that exhausted the local society. This can be seen in the local press, when, for instance, it is said that European and North.American public opinion believes that South.American use the word "revolution" to name any event in which they are involved, or that it is impossible to live in a continuous revolution. Moreover, this perspective is revealed in the very 1816 Independence Act, when it states: "End of the revolution, beginning of order". In the second period, on the other hand, the narrative on revolution expresses a critical regard upon the current political regime -rosism-, which is blamed for the interruption of the process begun in 1810 whose aims should be pursued to stand in the way to progress.Este articulo se propone explorar las imagenes y evocaciones en torno a la revolucion que circularon en el discurso publico y privado rioplatense, en el periodo comprendido entre los anos 1810 y 1816, y la reformulacion exhibida a partir de mediados de la decada de 1830, cuando en la memoria colectiva -al menos de un grupo que a partir de 1850 se identificara con la construccion del estado-nacion- se comienza a enhebrar un relato politico del pasado reciente. En este sentido se definen dos lineas de reflexion: en primer lugar, indagar el contexto intelectual y politico que habilito, en el marco del proceso revolucionario, el desplazamiento desde una retorica de la regeneracion politica asociada a los acontecimientos de mayo de 1810, hacia un discurso del orden que buscaba un punto de clausura para el proceso revolucionario; en segundo lugar, examinar el rol que comienza a jugar, dos decadas despues, la memoria historica en la construccion del mito fundacional de la revolucion. El primer periodo da cuenta de una cierta saturacion de la revolucion como concepto a la vez que como experiencia politica; y esto se ve con claridad cuando en la prensa local, por ejemplo, cuando senala que la opinion publica de Norteamerica y Europa cree que "los americanos a cualquier cosa que hacen le llaman revolucion", o cuando plantea como autocritica que no se podia "vivir en continua revolucion". Incluso el acta de declaracion de la independencia, de 1816, expresa una posicion similar estableciendo "fin a la revolucion, principio al orden". En el segundo periodo, en cambio, el relato sobre la revolucion expresa una mirada critica sobre el regimen politico del momento -el rosismo- al que se culpa por la interrupcion de un proceso iniciado en mayo de 1810 y que deberia ser retomado para adentrarse en el sendero del progreso
