It has been estimated that the world-wide population will increase and demand higher amounts of food and nitrogen fertiliser use. There is large-scale cowpea consumption and cultivation on the eastern savannahs of Venezuela where soil characteristics may negatively affect the rhizobial population. Such approaches reinforce the importance of evaluating native rhizobial flora and emphasise the need for increasing biological nitrogen fixation exploitation. Six rhizobial strains isolated from cowpea cv.
