The concept of gated community has acquired great relevance in social sciences due to the fact that it is a useful conceptual tool of research for the recent privatization and spatial fortification phenomena developed in contemporary societies. In this paper we will examine how the socio-spatial inequalities that this phenomenon print on urban development, can be studied through the concept of heterotopia. According to Hook and Vrdoljak´s (2002) and Blakely and Snyder´s (1999) research, we will observe how gated communities can be the result, at least in some way, of the contemporary discursive time about fear of �the others�.
