The science of occupation appears long after the occupational therapy, however the occupational therapists will have to support the therapeutic interventions based on the research to achieve the progress of their discipline. This article expects to incite to occupational therapists to go deeply in their profession and understanding their actions and the impact thereof. It outlines brevity the framework for understanding human occupations and the direction taken by the research in this field, with emphasis on the essential elements of occupation, the occupational process and the relationship of occupation with another phenomenon like it is health.La ciencia de la ocupación aparece mucho después que la terapia ocupacional, no obstante los terapeutas ocupacionales tendrán que apoyar las intervenciones terapéuticas sobre la base de la investigación para cosechar el progreso de su disciplina. Este artículo pretende incitar a los terapeutas ocupacionales a la profundización de su profesión y al entendimiento de sus actuaciones y la repercusión de las mismas. Se esboza con brevedad el marco para el conocimiento de las ocupaciones humanas y la dirección que ha de tomar la investigación en este campo, haciendo hincapié en los elementos esenciales de la ocupación, el proceso ocupacional y la relación de la ocupación con otro fenómeno como es la salud
