Historical writing has emphasized that Spanish rule was considered legitimate in the American colonies until the beginning of the 19th century. This was also the case for subaltern groups. But the question how political order in rural regions could be stabilized is less clear. The article seeks to shed light on this question by investigating the role of local crown officials in the province of Oaxaca in New Spain.
