This article explores farmers’ access to credit, explained by demand and supply forces in financial markets. Sample data for 317 farmers in three regions of Costa Rica are used to estimate probabilities of access to loans (multinomial and logit models). The sources of credit are classified in formal, semiformal, informal for profit, and credit received from friends and relatives. Significant variables include land ownership, level of education, age, value of output, amount and type of input used, geographical location, and transaction costs.
