Atonismo e imperialismo

The reform carried out by Akhenaten (Amenophis IV) implied the development of a more universal idea of the sun, and was the outcome of a process of centralization initiated by Amenophis III. This paper aims to demonstrate: (1) that Akhenaten knew how to use the traditional mechanisms of government, such as diplomacy, military expeditions, the building of a new residence (Akhetaten), the presentation of the king as a warrior, the celebration of festivals and rituals; (2) that his power was also based on new ways of control by enhancing the majesty of the king through his identification with the god Aten; and (3) the relation between the concept of the solar disk (Aten) as symbol of the universal lordship of the Pharaoh and the development of the idea of imperialism.La reforma llevada a cabo por Akhenaton (Amenofis IV) significó el desarrollo de una idea más universal del sol y fue consecuencia directa de un proceso de centralización política iniciado durante el reinado de su padre, Amenofis III. Este trabajo se propone demostrar: (1) que Akhenaton supo utilizar los mecanismos tradicionales de gobierno, tales como la diplomacia, las expediciones militares, la construcción de una nueva residencia (Akhetaton), la presentación del rey como guerrero, la celebración de festivales y rituales; (2) que su poder se basó también en nuevos mecanismos de control tendientes a enaltecer la figura del rey a través de su identificación con el dios Aton, y (3) la relación existente entre el concepto del disco solar (Aton) como símbolo del dominio universal del faraón y el desarrollo de la idea del imperialismo
