El recurso biográfico

Biography is a genere of writing that has been accepted with reluctance by 20th century historiographers; it is a hybrid genre that oscillates between the social sciences and literature. In Colombia, there has been little reflection upon our biographical tradition, for which reason this essay presents some of the essential problems posed by biography: among them, the Jndividual's role in history. Finally, the author considers historical biography to be a possible solution to the individual's relation to the normative context that determines it and to the relationship between the stylistic demands of biographical narrative and the requirements of research in the social sciences.La biografía ha sido un género de escritura aceptado con renuencia por la historiografía del siglo XX; es un género híbrido que oscila entre las ciencias sociales y la literatura. En Colombia, poco se ha reflexionado sobre nuestra tradición biográfica, por esa razón este ensayo expone algunos de los problemas esenciales que plantea la biografía, entre ellos el del papel del individuo en la historia. Al final, el autor considera que la «biografía histórica» es la posible solución a la relación del individuo con el contexto normativo que lo determina y a la relación entre las exigencias estilísticas del relato biográfico y los rigores de la investigación en ciencias sociales
