This study exposes a controlled trial of social intervention in families of schizophrenic patients with a high risk of relapsing. Patients were selected because they had much contact with relatives with a high level of expressed emotion. All patients maintained their treatments with neuroleptics. Half of the 24 families were ramdomly asignated to a rutine external check-up and the other had a social intervention package, consisted of an educational program on schizophrenia, a family group and family sessions for relatives and patients. The relapse rate in the control group was 50% compared to 9% of the experimental group (P=0,04).
