Why to choose Librarian as a profession? Exploring career-choice motivation among Library Science Students in Tamil Nadu

Background: The demands for professional librarians are changing every day. In Indian scenario, the Librarians used to work in government, academic and research institutions. This study aims to investigate about to explore the career choice motivation among library and information science students in Tamil Nadu. Methodology: The study design is cross-sectional and convenience sampling method is adopted. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. SPSS 18 PASW Statistical package was used for statistical analysis. Frequencies, percentages, t- test, ANOVA test were used in the study. Findings: A total of 277 students from six universities in Tamil Nadu, India were included in the study. This study aims to investigate about to explore the career choice motivation among library and information science students in Tamil Nadu. Majority of the students enrolled in the study were female and in the age group, below 23 years. Majority of the students were studying MPhil. Majority of the students were from rural area. Majority of the students\u27 father and mother have no formal education. Majority of the students don’t have any siblings working in library and have any previous working experience in library. Majority of the students like the library field and have personal will to choose librarian as a career choice. Conclusion: Despite the revolution in the librarian profession, the choice of librarianship as a profession among the students is dwindling. A proper attempt to solve this problem is important. The study results revealed that location is not a determining factor that motivates or demotivates the career choice but gender, learning mode and age group plays a vital role
