The authors of this paper consider the rural village unit and the family-kinship group to be the essential locus of the Serbian society at the time of the First Revolt. Since their general intention is to better understand and explain the nature of this society the authors decided that their approach in this paper be neither that of the social historian nor an attempt at psychohistory: but rather a reconstruction using tools borrowed from the demographic and ecological studies of contemporary societies commonly conducted by social anthropologists.
