In this paper I present the results of a study aimed at analysing the role played by the teacher in fostering an aware approach to the use of algebraic language as a tool to support problem solving. In particular, I will present the analysis of a class discussion focused on the resolution of a geometric problem that could be solved through the construction of a suitable equation. This analysis, performed referring to a theoretical construct I developed in previous studies, will enable to characterise how the teachers should try to behave when facing this kind of problem solving activities in their classes
