The self-assembly behaviour of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in the presence of a water-soluble polymer can be exploited to yield layered nanocomposites whose microstructures resemble that of nacre. These bioinspired nanomaterials exhibit remarkable mechanical and barrier properties, rendering them attractive as structural and packaging materials. In aqueous dispersion, GO forms lyotropic liquid crystals (LCs).
