This thesis examines the role of shame, space and language in the formation of queer identity within two novels, Guapa by Saleem Haddad (New York: Other Press, 2016) and Fi Ghurfat al-'Ankabut [In the Spider's Room] by Muhammad 'Abdul Nabi (Alexandria: Dar al 'Ayn, 2016). I begin with an overview of the theoretical material against which I read these two novels in order to situate them within a larger framework of debate surrounding the themes of shame, language, and space. I then analyze the role of language in the development of a queer identity of the two main characters of each work, Rasa and Hani, respectively.
