Compaction is the first morphogenetic event essential for the formation of the blastocyst during mouse preimplantation development. It is recognized as an increase in cell-cell contact and minimizing the exposed surface area of the embryo. However, the molecular mechanisms governing compaction have not been elucidated. To identify molecular changes before and after compaction, we investigated the distribution of the actomyosin network and the E-cadherin complex, which are major regulators of cell shape.
